Who doesn’t love the pizza pie, though?! Seriously. The lovely little Sophia tries to show a little restraint.

The suspense is killing her! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 😉
(Do not attempt this at home. Baking pan can cause serious injury)

She’s over it, now. Can you tell? She’s no longer amused. This is when I put my camera away!

I am headed out to Ft. Worth for a few days due to the passing of a friend’s mother whom I was close to. Bad things seem to happen to the good people all the time. She will be missed dearly :(.

Sorry if you’re vegetarian and this makes you sick!  Went out to the world famous Salt Lick for some of the baddest BBQ around!  If you’re ever in Central Texas, you HAVE to clog a few more arteries at this establishment.

Tricky shooting situations

I went to a legendary local venue called Emo’s the other night to take some shots for – during the venue’s annual FREE WEEK of music.  And it just so happens that one of the acts on the bill is a dude that I’ve mentioned on one of my prior postings – El Paso Hot Button. Great show! What wasn’t so great is the lighting.  This is a tiny, punked out and low-budget venue. The kind of venue that makes you want to avoid using the bathroom at all costs.  Nonetheless, it’s a famous place, hosting some of the best bands that come to Austin. And we all know that Austin IS the live music capitol of the world, right?!  So the lights, or lack thereof, consists of a few spotlights with what seems to be covered with  colored cellophane of the yellow and red variety. Makes for a really tricky shooting situation.  That night, there were two other photographers there and it kind of made me feel good that, they too, were shooting with Nikon.  However, they were both using flash :O!  C’mon! I mean, who enjoys blinding the crowd AND the performers?! How rude! I shot without flash and avoided annoying anyone, and I was able to retain the ambient light that makes Emo’s so unique.  Check it out!

The Blacks

Ume (She had really great stage presence!)

And last but not least, El Paso Hot Button!  If you recall, about a month ago, I posted a video of this guy performing.  If you didn’t see it, go back a page and check! DO IT.  But know this – the video does NOT do him justice at all.  He exceeded all expectations of mine.  He hit it out of the park. HE ROCKS!  Nice guy, too.  Prior to his set, he was kind enough to let me take an impromptu portrait of him and his wife in the dingy corridors of Emo’s.  Check it!

Lookie what the dude in brown dropped off today!

I know…..they’re not Pocket Wizards, but I don’t really think I will be shooting further than these are capable of.  And also because I’m sort of poor.  Initial tests around the house indicate that these bad boys operate and function as promised.  I’ll probably do more extensive testing this weekend, at the zoo, maybe. I have a special invitation by the Head Zoo Keeper of the Austin Zoo to tour the facilities and take some pictures. We’ll see! Don’t wanna scare any of the animals and cause a stampede or anything like that.  Well, here they are, the Paul C. Buff Cybersync wireless radio triggers!! These 3 units cost about what you’ll pay for just one single Pocket Wizard transceiver.

Shot with my D700 at ISO 6400 with my Sigma 50mm set to f2. Yes sixty-four freaking hundred ISO.

Yo Yo

So, today, I realized that I haven’t touched my camera in almost a week. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?!?! Something must be seriously wrong with me to neglect my poor camera.  So I packed up my stuff and headed out to the park just to snap some shots off, of nothing in particular….y’know, just to get the cobwebs off.  So I get to the park and the first thing I noticed was a really bright garden area with this super BRIGHT GREEN grass amidst all this dead Texas winter brown grass.  I kneel down, compose my shot, fire off 3 shutter actuations,  and then BLAM – the freaking batteries die on me!!! These are things one should always check before leaving the house!  Grrrr!  Here’s the shot…oh let me tell you, it was worth going all that way to get this one shot!

(YESSS!!! Looks like I’ve also solved the small and blurry image dilemma as well) 😀

So I’m driving home feeling like a total Yo Yo for not having checked my battery before heading out.  Then, as soon as I open my front door, there on top of the bar, sat the Yo Yo that “Santa” had left in my stocking.  What a coincidence, huh? So anyways, to make a stupid story short, I had to take a picture of the Yo Yo.  But not before changing out for a charged battery!  As a side note…did Y’all know that the Yo Yo came from the Philippines??? Wikipedia says it actually came about in 500 B.C. from the Greeks, but I don’t believe them! Apparently, back in the day, my distant Filipino relatives used the Yo Yo as a weapon.  Look how far we’ve come! Weeeeeee!

P.S. Do you like the new look of the blog? Pshhhh….bet you didn’t even notice.

I think I might upload them as original size…it seems that WordPress degrades the quality of them in any other size. I guess I’ll have to play around with it. So, as I’m sittin’ here jamming out to Beck, finishing processing these First Night images, I have to stop and say once again at how impressed I am with my D700! Indoor shots? No problemo! Night shots? Heh…they’re almost a thing of the past. This sensor just absorbs any available light there is – AMAZING. Anyways……here are the pics. Hope you like ’em!

Yeah….something’s up……these images look soft now. HMPH! Damn you, WordPress!! I’ll try and rectify all this for Y’all. Peace!

EDIT: Yes! I figured it out,  it was USER ERROR.  I’m sorry I ever cursed at you, WordPress!
